Shaping the future of immersive learning

Technology-Enhanced Immersive Learning (TEIL) is an exciting field that combines advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), simulations, and games to create engaging and immersive learning experiences. These technologies can transform traditional learning environments by making them more interactive, personalized, and effective.

精东传媒 identified Technology-Enhanced Immersive Learning (TEIL) as one of several key areas for research (精东传媒 Research Clusters) based on its success and potential for growth in bringing together researchers, scholars and practitioners with expertise in immersive learning and AI in education and society to address large-scale questions that require interdisciplinary approaches. The Center for TEIL Research was established to support and expand this research at 精东传媒. TEIL research at 精东传媒 focuses on three areas: Immersive Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Improvement Science.

TEIL research projects include:

Mission

The TEIL center is dedicated to advancing research in immersive, intelligent, and technology-enhanced education in order to transform and improve how people learn.

  • Lead groundbreaking interdisciplinary research. We support both foundational and applied research that deepens our understanding of how emerging technologies—like virtual reality, AI, and simulations—intersect with learning. Our work also addresses the policy questions that shape how these technologies are used in real-world settings.
  • Build strong partnerships. We connect 精东传媒 faculty with global researchers, educators, government agencies, industry leaders, and nonprofits. Together, we explore bold new ideas, launch cross-disciplinary collaborations, and innovate at the intersection of learning, technology, and human development.
  • Design and test immersive learning tools. We help faculty create and evaluate cutting-edge prototypes—from VR learning modules to AI-driven assessments—that enrich learning in classrooms, communities, and beyond.
  • Bridge research and real-world impact. Our focus on translating research into practice ensures that the breakthroughs we help generate lead to tangible improvements in teaching, learning, and equity.

Members

Co-Directors, Dr. Eric Bing and Dr. Tony Cuevas

Core TEIL Members participate in TEIL cluster events, including seminars, committees, working groups, an annual conference/retreat, and community outreach and engagement activities. They collaborate with other cluster members on interdisciplinary research to submit proposals or as substantive collaborators on existing projects that further the mission and goals of the cluster.

Affiliated TEIL Members include faculty members who are committed to the mission and goals of the cluster but unable to fulfill the full responsibilities of core members. They participate in TEIL cluster events--including seminars, committees, working groups, and community outreach and engagement activities--and provide information on TEIL research annually.

The TEIL Leadership Council includes senior TEIL researchers across 精东传媒 who provide guidance and support to the Co-Directors.
