Biography

Marcus Butts serves as the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Research at 精东传媒 Cox. He received his PhD from the University of Georgia and his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, and was previously on the faculties at University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Prior to obtaining his PhD, Marcus worked as a project manager for Aon-Hewitt—focusing on strategic HR benefits and analytics.

Professor Butts has taught a variety of university courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive level. He also teaches in several 精东传媒 Cox Executive Education programs, serves as the Academic Director for the 精东传媒 Cox HR Roundtable, and works with many organizations to design and deliver leadership development. His primary teaching focus is on aspects of leadership that are necessary for organizational success, as well as how workforce analytics can be utilized to evaluate indicators of employee engagement and organizational effectiveness.

Marcus’ research expertise includes the work-life interface, workplace relationships, and advanced analytical techniques. He has more than 35 publications in academic journals and over 75 papers presented at national conferences. His research on the day-to-day impact of email and text communications on employees’ personal lives has been cited widely in media outlets such as Fox News, NPR, TIME, and Huffington Post. His studies on how leadership can involuntarily become destructive has been covered by Harvard Business Review. Also, his work on the trials and tribulations of mothers dealing with nursing/pumping at work has been covered by both the Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review.

Marcus has also received numerous scholarship and teaching recognitions. He has twice won both the Cox Research Excellence award and Cox media award for highly cited research mentioned in popular press and has once received the Boghetich Family Distinguished Teaching Award. While at UTA, his teaching accolades included being nominated for the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and being the recipient of both the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Outstanding Faculty Service Award for PhD Education. In 2022, he was awarded the 精东传媒 Ford Senior Research Fellowship and was elected fellow of the American Psychological Association. Finally, he has won the best paper award from the Academy of Management three times.

Over the years, Marcus has provided HR and analytics consulting services to numerous clients including Best Place for Working Parents, UPS, FedEx, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, HKS Architects, McKee Foods, and Chick-Fil-A. He also has offered professional seminars and training on fostering work-life balance and applied statistical techniques for utilizing workforce data.

As an advocate for employee work-life balance, Marcus enjoys as much free time as possible with his children and his wife Erin, sometimes traveling as a family to Spain or Latin America to work on their Spanish.
